What O'Horten Is About
Odd Horten has driven trains for forty years and never once departed from his routine. On the night of his retirement dinner everything goes wrong: he cannot get into the building, he falls asleep in a boy's room, he misses his last run. Odd things keep happening in the days that follow. He witnesses an arrest, makes friends with an old man, gets into a car beside a driver wearing a blindfold, and acquires a dog. Bent Hamer's Norwegian film proceeds with almost no dialogue, with Baard Owe as Horten. It treats retirement not as a loss but as the first time a man looks at his own life from outside. It rests on snow-covered landscapes and a very dry humour.
