What Eggs Is About
Two brothers in their seventies, Pa and Moe, have lived their whole lives together in a small house in the country; the one exception was a weekend Pa spent riding his moped to Sweden during the war. The past comes back when Konrad, the grown son from that trip, turns up to live with them after his mother falls ill, and an arrangement built for two will not stretch to three. Bent Hamer wrote and directed it, his first feature, and the fixed gaze and quiet humour of his later films start here. It screened in Directors’ Fortnight at Cannes in 1995, took best first film at Moscow, the FIPRESCI prize at Toronto and the Amanda in Norway.
