What Old Well Is About

A married man in a water starved village in northwest China sets out with a former girlfriend to dig a well for the place. The well collapses and the two of them are trapped beneath it, and that enforced confinement leads them to think again about what they feel for each other and for the people around them. Wu Tianming’s hundred and twenty nine minute film was written by Zheng Yi and made at the Xi’an Film Studio. The man at the centre is played by Zhang Yimou, his first attempt at acting, and it won him best actor at the Tokyo International Film Festival. The film took the grand prize at the same festival and, the following year, best picture and best director at the Golden Rooster awards.
