What The King of Masks Is About
Wang Bianlian is an old street performer, one of the last few who know the Sichuan art of changing faces. The art can only be taught to a boy, and Wang's son died years ago; there is nobody left. One day he buys a child at a market, believing he has found an heir to carry the art on after him. Then he discovers the child is a girl, and everything changes. Wu Tianming's film is about the disappearance of a traditional art and, at the same time, about what it meant to be born a girl in China. Zhu Xu plays the old man and Zhou Ren-Ying the child.
