What On a Clear Day Is About
Frank Redmond is fifty-five and has spent his whole working life in the Glasgow shipyards. He is laid off, and for the first time he has no idea what to do with himself, and far too much pride to ask. His mates are around him and the hole stays where it is. Then a remark slips out, and Frank sets himself something impossible: to swim the English Channel. Gaby Dellal's 2005 film is not about sport, it is about pride. Frank does not know how to talk to Joan, his wife, or to the son he has been estranged from for years, and that is the thing he is really wrestling with out in the water. Peter Mullan never softens; Brenda Blethyn plays it with patience.
