What On Her Shoulders Is About
Nadia Murad, a Yazidi woman of twenty three, survived the genocide and the captivity she was subjected to. Afterwards she had to tell her story again and again to politicians, to institutions and to the press, and an ordinary young woman found herself on the world stage as the voice of her people. The documentary watches less the moments at the podium than what happens away from it: the bureaucracy, the weight that being known brings, what well meaning people expect of her, and what it means to tell the same pain over and over. The film does not make a spectacle of what she recounts; its real subject is the cost of bearing witness. Alexandria Bombach’s ninety five minute American documentary was completed in 2018.
