What Once Upon a Time in Shanghai Is About
Ma Yongzhen leaves his village for Shanghai meaning to work and make money, but his hands take him somewhere else. On the docks, in the street, in the fight hall, he beats whoever steps up, and the gangs carving up the city take notice. The higher he rises, the heavier the question of whose man he is. Wong Ching-Po's film is a remake of The Boxer from Shantung from 1972, and the story is not the point. The fights are heavy and deliberately unglamorous, with Sammo Hung as the old master.
