What Once Upon My Mother Is About

In 1963 Esther gives birth to Roland, the youngest of a large family, born with a club foot that keeps him from standing. Everyone tells her to lower her expectations; instead she promises her son that he will walk like everybody else and have a wonderful life, and then spends the rest of her own life keeping that promise. Ken Scott takes a true story and builds it into a comedy about stubbornness sustained across decades. Leïla Bekhti plays Esther, and Sylvie Vartan, named in the original title, appears as herself.
