One Night... a Train

Mathias, a Belgian professor of linguistics, and Anne, his French partner, have drifted a long way apart. Even in an enlightened Europe and a doubly enlightened university, that small difference keeps throwing a shadow across them. Then one day, in the middle of a train journey, Anne disappears, and Mathias starts looking for her in a city he does not know. André Delvaux is again working from a novel by Johan Daisne and again erasing the line between what happens and what is imagined. Yves Montand and Anouk Aimée play it. Belgium's language question is not background here; it is the crack running through the relationship. Everything after they step off the train is built openly as a dream, and it never lets the viewer settle anywhere.
