Govert Miereveld is a lawyer in a small Flemish town who also teaches at a girls' school. He tells nobody about the love he carries for one of his students, Fran, and after she graduates he loses sight of her. Some time later his work requires him to attend an autopsy, and what he sees that day unbalances him. Afterwards he becomes convinced he has found Fran again and arranges to meet her. André Delvaux's first feature, adapted from Johan Daisne's novel, is generally credited with opening the magic realist vein in Belgian cinema. The line between what happens and what is imagined is deliberately left undecided; by the end you cannot say for certain what you watched. It is cold, unsettling, and impossible to shake off.
