Shirley Clarke's 1986 documentary is about the musician Ornette Coleman. The material was gathered over more than twenty years, and Clarke refuses to put it in chronological order. The form resembles Coleman's music. Images are layered, video effects used and concerts cut through with staged scenes; the narrative does not explain and puts the music itself first. Coleman's childhood is acted out with performers; William S. Burroughs and others appear. Clarke came from experimental cinema and this was her last film. Who it's for: those who like jazz history and experimental documentary. Who it's not for: viewers expecting an orderly biography; the film keeps no chronology and does not explain its subject.
