Paris, 1959. The American saxophonist Dale Turner finds in Europe the respect he could not get at home, and brings his drinking and his exhaustion with him. Outside the club a French admirer too broke to buy a drink listens through the wall, and their friendship opens the man's last productive stretch. The character was assembled from Bud Powell and Lester Young, and the French admirer from Francis Paudras, who really did look after Powell. Bertrand Tavernier had the music played live on set rather than added later. Dexter Gordon was an actual jazz musician and was nominated for an Oscar; Herbie Hancock won one for the score.
