What They Shot the Piano Player Is About
This 2023 animated documentary by Fernando Trueba and Javier Mariscal traces the Brazilian pianist Francisco Tenório Júnior. Tenório was among the most gifted of the generation that joined samba to jazz; in 1976, on tour in Buenos Aires, he left his hotel and was never seen again. The film uses the investigation of a fictional music journalist as its frame and rests on real interviews: musicians of the period, family members and witnesses speak, and the conversations are animated. Two lines run together: the history of Brazilian music after bossa nova, and the politics of disappearance under Latin America's military dictatorships. Jeff Goldblum voices the journalist. The drawing style is warm and feels hand-made. Who it's for: listeners of jazz and Brazilian music and anyone interested in animated documentary. Who it's not for: viewers who would rather not approach enforced disappearance and state violence.
