What Year of Enlightment Is About
April 1940. Manolo, sixteen, and Jesus, eight, are delivered by their older brother Pepe, an army lieutenant, to a sanatorium for tubercular children on the Portuguese border. Surrounded by boys much younger than himself, Manolo starts treating himself as a grown man; the only other adult male around is Emilio, who looks after the gardens and whatever else needs doing. Irene, a Falangist, runs the place. Manolo's first sexual experience is a shamefaced piece of spying, and then he falls hopelessly for Maria Jesus from the village. Fernando Trueba tells postwar Spain at a boy's scale.
