What The Artist and the Model Is About
The summer of 1943, in occupied France. An old and celebrated sculptor has not worked for years; the appetite is gone and he has withdrawn from the world. One day his wife brings into the house a young Spanish refugee who has crossed the border. The girl becomes his model. The man starts working again, and something builds quietly in the studio that is neither love nor teaching but somewhere between the two. Outside, the war goes on. Fernando Trueba shot the film in black and white. Jean Rochefort plays the sculptor, Claudia Cardinale his wife and Aida Folch the model. It is a patient, almost wordless film about how art actually gets made.
