Michel Descombes, a watchmaker in Lyon, learns from the police that his son has killed a man and run off with his girlfriend. The man realises he does not know his son: in all the years they lived together they talked about nothing. An unexpected closeness forms between him and Guiboud, the inspector on the case, and the father tries to understand rather than defend. Bertrand Tavernier adapted Georges Simenon's novel for his first film and moved the story from America to Lyon. Philippe Noiret plays the father and Jean Rochefort the inspector. It is not a crime picture; who committed the crime is clear from the start and the matter is a man rereading his own life. It won a prize in Berlin.
