Daddy Nostalgia

Caroline, a screenwriter who is half English and half French, comes to her parents’ house on the Riviera after her father’s heart surgery. Tony, a retired businessman, is failing, and the closeness the two of them never managed before arrives only now, at the end. Each member of the family works out a way of handling the death that is coming. Bertrand Tavernier directed and wrote the script with Colo Tavernier O’Hagan, and the film was entered at Cannes in 1990. Dirk Bogarde plays Tony, Jane Birkin plays Caroline and Odette Laure the mother. It was the last film Bogarde made. Denis Lenoir photographed it and Antoine Duhamel wrote the music. It went out as These Foolish Things in Britain and as Daddy Nostalgia in the United States, opening on 5 September 1990.
