What Our Father Is About
Two brothers wake one morning to find their father has left the house. Bewildered, they take to the streets, skip school, sneak into the cinema, think they see their father up on the screen, and steal the reels so they can go through the frames one at a time. Their mother eventually gives up and sends them away to a Koranic school; they plan an escape, and then the elder boy falls for a deaf girl. Mahamat-Saleh Haroun sets the story in Chad and lets a private loss carry the state of a country with it. It screened at Cannes in 2002 and won best cinematography at FESPACO in 2003.
