What Our Twisted Hero Is About
Han Byung-tae, who teaches at a private cram school in Seoul, hears that his old teacher has died and travels back to the country town where he went to primary school. On the train he remembers what happened in that classroom years before. Arriving as the boy from the city, he found a whole order already in place, built by the class monitor Eom Seok-dae; everyone including the teacher had accepted it, and whoever objected stood alone. Adapted from the novel by Yi Mun-yol, the film is read as an allegory of the years of dictatorship in Korea told from inside a classroom. Hong Kyung-in and Choi Min-sik appear in Park Chong-won’s hundred and nineteen minute film, completed in 1992.
