Hassan Farhat What Out of Life Is About
Patrick Perrault, photographing the war in Beirut in the late eighties, is bundled into a car at gunpoint one day, blindfolded and driven somewhere he cannot identify, and works out there that he has been taken hostage. The rest of the film is about what follows: the closed rooms, the waiting, the changing of hands. Maroun Bagdadi wrote it with Didier Decoin and Elias Khoury, from Roger Auque’s account of his own captivity in Beirut, with music by Nicola Piovani. It shared the Jury Prize at Cannes in 1991 with Lars von Trier’s Europa. The men holding him are not treated as a mass but as separate people.
