Wolfgang Petersen did not film a book. The script is an original by Laurence Dworet, a physician, and Robert Roy Pool; producer Arnold Kopelson bought it wanting a virus picture to beat the Richard Preston adaptation then at Fox. Lynda Obst’s version of that book collapsed and reached the screen only in 2019, as a National Geographic series. Sam Daniels was offered to Harrison Ford, Sylvester Stallone and Mel Gibson, and each passed. Cedar Creek was played by Ferndale, California, where tanks and helicopters were ordinary town furniture across roughly 2 months of shooting. The best built stretch is the cinema sequence where the virus turns airborne: Petersen stages the jump as an enclosed room rather than a statistic. Then the register changes, and quarantine management gives way to a helicopter chase and an attempt to turn a bomber off its target. The medical shortcuts are deliberate too. The virus multiplies in 1 hour instead of days, the cure is synthesised in under 1 minute, and the injection works on contact. The film held the top of the American box office for 3 weeks. A good fit if you can take the quarantine procedure and the chain of command argument being dropped halfway for an aerial chase. Not for anyone who wants the laboratory logic carried through to the end.
