What Outside the Wall Is About
Paroled after serving nearly half of a thirty year sentence, Larry Nelson is determined not to fall into the hands of the law again and takes a quiet job at a country sanatorium. There he meets the nurse Charlotte Maynard and falls for her; but he understands that the only way to come near her is a great deal of money, since as the film has it what she is after is money. The film works with the moulds of film noir and presents life after release as the truly dangerous ground. The account does not offer the man as someone reformed; it says where the test lies. Richard Basehart plays the lead in Crane Wilbur’s eighty minute American film, completed in 1950.
