What Over the Town Is About
Arakawa Ao is a young man who almost never leaves the Shimokitazawa district of Tokyo; he works in a secondhand clothes shop, goes to the occasional concert and sits in the same bar every evening. One day he gets an unexpected offer to appear in an independent film. That offer brings him into the lives of several women in the neighbourhood and them into his: someone who works in a bookshop, the director making the film, and a costumier he meets on set. The film gives the air of a district and the way young people keep missing each other; it moves through talk rather than through plot. Rikiya Imaizumi’s hundred and thirty minute Japanese film was completed in 2019.
