What Owner of the Story Is About

A woman of fifty looks back over her past and imagines herself at twenty. What if she had not gone to that ball? What if, instead of meeting the man of her life, marrying him and having children, she had called a friend and gone to the theatre? The film opens each of those questions as a separate possibility and lets the two women, the young one and the older one, talk in the same scene. Daniel Filho directed the film from a stage play. Marieta Severo plays the older woman and Débora Falabella her younger self, while Antônio Fagundes and Rodrigo Santoro play the same man at two ages. The telling sits between regret and curiosity and declares none of the possibilities better than another. Its origin on stage is plainly felt in how the scenes are built.
