In the autumn of 1930 two bodies come up in the nets of a small town on the Spanish coast, and the film doubles back to explain how they got there. Pandora is a woman who persuades men to destroy themselves: one drives his racing car into the sea for her, a matador faces a bull for her. Then a yacht puts into the harbour and it slowly becomes clear who is aboard, a captain condemned to sail for centuries and released only if someone will die for him. Albert Lewin shot it on the Costa Brava and the cinematographer Jack Cardiff turns Technicolor into something close to painting. Ava Gardner and James Mason lead. Tossa de Mar still keeps a bronze statue of Gardner. Who it is for: viewers who like mythic romance and classic colour cinema. Who it is not for: anyone after realism, since the film speaks the language of legend throughout.
