What The Moon and Sixpence Is About
Albert Lewin’s 1942 film adapts Somerset Maugham’s novel, itself loosely built on the life of Paul Gauguin, and was Lewin’s first picture as an independent director. George Sanders plays Charles Strickland, a middle-aged stockbroker who one day abandons his family, his class and every obligation he has in order to paint. The film does not ennoble him. From that point he is a dreadful human being who has surrendered to exactly one thing, and the camera is far more interested in what he costs the people around him than in the canvases he produces. The Tahiti passages are in sepia, with colour arriving only at the end, in the scenes of the burning hut. Dimitri Tiomkin’s score was nominated for an Oscar.
