What The Private Affairs of Bel Ami Is About
Albert Lewin's film is set in Paris at the end of the nineteenth century. Georges Duroy uses the influential women around him as so many steps in a fast rise through journalism, each affair buying a position and each position buying the next affair. The woman who genuinely loves him he leaves until last, and calculates there too. Rather than passing a moral verdict the film shows the mechanics of the ascent coldly, so corruption is not an exception but the way the system runs. George Sanders plays it exactly as required, without a trace of regret, and Angela Lansbury and Ann Dvorak are in the cast. The telling stays close to the tradition of the Maupassant novel.
