What Papa, Can You Hear Me Sing? Is About
A poor army veteran in Taiwan cannot speak; he makes his living selling the empty bottles he collects in the streets, and he takes in and raises a girl he finds. Ah-mei grows up, her voice is discovered and she goes into show business. The more famous she becomes, the further she moves from her father and from the neighbourhood she came from. The film gives that distance not simply as a betrayal but as two lives going in different directions, and it holds the daughter’s choice and the father’s silence at the same weight. The best known song she sings comes from the words he used to call out in the street while collecting bottles. Yu Kan-Ping’s hundred minute Taiwanese film won four Golden Horse awards; it was completed in 1983.
