Paper Boats

Kugy likes to write; she writes fairy tales and puts them in paper boats and sets them on the water. She starts university. Keenan has just arrived; he paints, and his family will not accept it as a profession and wants him to study business. The two meet and understand each other. Neither says so; other people come between them, the families intervene and their paths separate. Years pass. Each does their own work and each carries something unfinished. Hanung Bramantyo directs. Adipati Dolken, Maudy Ayunda and Reza Rahadian are in the cast. It is an Indonesian production. The source is Dee Lestari's novel; the book had sold widely in Indonesia and the film was made in two parts. The matter it works at is the choice of a profession; both characters have to take the path their families want and the film treats that directly. The sections in Bali are its visually strongest side. The structure follows the novel and there are many characters; some side strands stand outside the narrative. The character played by Reza Rahadian is the third corner of the triangle and the narrative does not leave him one dimensional. It did good business in Indonesia and found an answer among younger viewers. Who it is for: viewers who like Indonesian youth drama and literary adaptation. Who it is not for: it is long, the narrative spreads across two parts, and the emotional register is high.
