Habibie & Ainun 3

The film tells the story of Ainun's youth. She is a hard working and clever student at school, among the best in her class and the focus of attention of the boys around her. Habibie is at the same school and in those years the two do not notice each other. Ainun wants to study medicine. Her family, the conditions of the time and expectations about which profession a woman may choose stand in her way. The narrative follows the process by which she makes her own decision; the love story stays in second place beside it. Hanung Bramantyo directs. Maudy Ayunda plays Ainun and Reza Rahadian plays Habibie. It is an Indonesian production. It is the third link in a series about the same couple and this time goes back in time. The people at the centre are real: B. J. Habibie served as president of Indonesia and Ainun was a doctor; their story is widely known in the country. Unlike the two earlier films, this one puts the woman at the centre and places her professional aim ahead of the relationship. Reza Rahadian played the same part in all three films and became identified with it. The period reconstruction is detailed; the Indonesia of the fifties and sixties is built in the school and city scenes. Its limit is register; the narrative draws too ideal a portrait at times. Who it is for: anyone curious about Indonesian cinema and true life stories. Who it is not for: it is predictable, the emotional register is high, and the context is missing for anyone who does not know the series.
