What Pastoral Symphony Is About
A pastor in the countryside takes in a blind orphan girl and raises her himself. In time he realises that what he feels for her is not compassion, and cannot admit it even to himself, while his son falls in love with the same young woman. Jean Delannoy adapted Andre Gide’s novel into a film about how faith can be pressed into the service of self deception. Michele Morgan won best actress for it in the first year of Cannes, and the film took the festival’s grand prize the same year.
