What The Hunchback of Notre Dame Is About
Paris, 1482. At the Feast of Fools, Esmeralda dances in the square before the cathedral. Frollo, an alchemist watching from a tower, is fixated on her and orders Quasimodo, the bell-ringer, to carry her off. But when Quasimodo gets close to her, that changes. Jean Delannoy directed; Gina Lollobrigida plays Esmeralda and Anthony Quinn plays Quasimodo. Jacques Prévert worked on the screenplay. It was shot in colour and for a wide screen. One thing worth knowing: this version keeps the dark ending of Hugo's novel and does not finish the way the 1996 animated film does.
