As Inspector Maigret fits the pieces together, he sees the man can only be brought out by a trap. Jean Gabin played Maigret three times and this is the first. Jean Delannoy directed. Adapted from Simenon, it keeps the novel's cool, unshowy temper: not a chase but a mechanism assembled patiently. Annie Girardot is among the younger cast.
