What Patterns of Evidence: The Exodus Is About
The filmmaker Timothy Mahoney is going through a crisis of faith: mainstream archaeology says there is no material evidence for the Exodus of the Israelites from Egypt. Mahoney sets out after that problem and spends twelve years travelling between excavation sites, archives and specialists from Egypt to Israel. The film's argument is this: the evidence is not missing, people are looking in the wrong period. That view rests largely on the alternative chronology proposed by David Rohl. Rohl's chronology, though, is not an accepted position in archaeology and Egyptology; the mainstream still holds that no material trace of such a mass departure has been found. Specialists from both sides speak in the documentary, but where the film itself lands is clear. It is best watched as a film making a case.
