What Patti Smith: Dream of Life Is About
Steven Sebring filmed Patti Smith over eleven years, and what came out is not a biography but a portrait of a presence. The film builds no chronology; it holds the poetry, the painting, the music and the ordinary days in one current, with Smith’s own voice standing in for narration. The people who shaped her and stood beside her pass through it: William Burroughs, Allen Ginsberg, Bob Dylan, Robert Mapplethorpe and Michael Stipe. Lenny Kaye, Jay Dee Daugherty, Philip Glass, Flea and Sam Shepard appear on camera. Sebring is a fashion photographer by trade and the look of the film is built from that eye; it won the award for cinematography at the 2008 Sundance Film Festival, was nominated for a Primetime Emmy, and screened at the Berlin Film Festival.
