What Pennywise: The Story of ‘It’ Is About
John Campopiano and Chris Griffiths's 2021 documentary tells the story of how the 1990 television version of It was made. Stephen King's long novel was turned into a two-part miniseries, and a crew working inside the limits of a broadcast network had to find ways of building horror without showing it. The film speaks to cast, producers and the makeup team, describing in detail how Tim Curry's clown was arrived at and what the set was like. The experience of the child actors at the time and the mark it left on them thirty years later is its most striking part. The presentation is aimed at fans, long and repetitive, with no critical distance. Who it's for: viewers curious about television horror of the eighties and nineties and about how things were made. Who it's not for: anyone who has not seen the miniseries; the documentary assumes you have.
