What Peony Pavilion Is About
In Suzhou in the thirties an intense relation forms between the fifth wife of an aristocrat given to opium, her husband’s female cousin, and a young instructor. What binds the three is neither quite friendship nor quite love; the hierarchy inside the house and the place of women in that order decide every step. The account does not give its events quickly; looks, clothes, music and the arrangement of rooms carry the story. The film also leans on the classical stage arts of the period. The account declares none of the three at fault; it shows what each of them had to give up. Joey Wong and Rie Miyazawa appear in Yonfan’s hundred and twenty three minute Hong Kong film, completed in 2001.
