What Personal Column Is About

In Paris eleven young women disappear one after another and the police can find no trace. An arrangement is made with Adrienne Charpentier, a friend of the last woman to vanish: she agrees to be used as bait and to try to meet whoever is responsible through the newspaper advertisements. That brings her face to face with several strange men, each of whom becomes the chief suspect for a while. The film draws its fear not from dark streets but from the ordinariness of everyday advertisements. Maurice Chevalier and Erich von Stroheim appear in Robert Siodmak’s hundred and fourteen minute French film, completed in 1939.
