What Picture Bride Is About
Kayo Hatta's film is about a historical practice in which Japanese labourers found wives across an ocean by exchanging photographs. Riyo, an orphan of seventeen, sails from Yokohama to Hawaii to marry Matsuji, whom she has never met. The man waiting on the dock is not the man in the photograph he sent, and he is twice her age. The film treats this not as a misunderstanding but as a girl dropped into a life arranged without her consent, and the work in the cane fields weighs on her as heavily as the marriage does. What holds her up is her friendship with Kana, a young mother. It won the audience award at Sundance, and Toshiro Mifune appears in one of his last roles.
