Brian Ladoon What Picture of Light Is About
A film crew travels to Churchill, the northernmost town in Manitoba, to film the northern lights. The journey takes three thousand miles by train, the camera is specially prepared to work at forty below, and the crew wait in a motel for days for the sky to open. The documentary films the waiting too: the people of the town, the snow, the silence and the strangeness of chasing something that may not be captured. Peter Mettler asks what recording a visible thing turns it into. The journey was paid for by the Swiss meteorologist Andreas Züst, who backed the film. The director himself reads the voiceover of the eighty three minute Canadian Swiss production; it was completed in 1994.
