What Pinjar Is About

In the days leading up to the partition of India, a Hindu woman is abducted by a Muslim man. She is first married off by force, and then, as the borders are drawn, finds herself in land that now counts as another country. For her the partition is not a piece of news but the name of being torn from the place she was born; going back and staying are equally impossible. The film tells this rupture of the late nineteen forties through the life of a single woman and does not hide what those years did to women. It was adapted from a novel. Urmila Matondkar and Manoj Bajpayee appear in Chandra Prakash Dwivedi’s hundred and eighty eight minute Indian film, completed in 2003.
