What Plainlands Is About

A group of brothers come back to the family place with their families to honour the memory of their recently dead father. The days they spend together open old wounds and create new ones; the inheritance, accounts left over from the past and who did what all come onto the table. In the end everything comes back to brotherhood: whatever happens, brothers look after their own. The film builds its humour on the stubborn, taciturn temperament attributed to the north of Finland, and the long days of summer soften that hardness. Pekka Parikka’s hundred and twenty nine minute Finnish film was adapted from Antti Tuuri’s novel of the same name. Taneli Mäkelä, Esko Salminen and Esko Nikkari appear; it was completed in 1988.
