What The Winter War Is About
In November 1939 the Soviet Union attacks Finland and reservists from Kauhava in the west of the country are called to the front, among them two brothers who are farmers. From there the film looks for no heroism: trenches, cold, waiting, artillery arriving without warning, and the people you know disappearing one at a time. That is why it runs three hours; the length of the war is part of the telling. Adapted from Antti Tuuri's novel. The Winter War ended in March 1940 with Finland losing territory and keeping its independence.
