What Under the Volcano Is About
In a small Mexican town the disgraced British consul Geoffrey Firmin drinks from morning until night on the Day of the Dead. On the same day his former wife Yvonne comes back hoping to save the marriage, with his half-brother Hugh alongside her. War is about to start in Europe, and one man's self-destruction begins to look like the condition of a whole civilisation. Adapted from Malcolm Lowry's novel, which was long called unfilmable, and indeed most of the book's interior voice is gone, leaving the last day of a drunk. Albert Finney was nominated for the best actor Oscar.
