What Plastic China Is About
Yi-Jie is eleven and does not go to school; she works with her parents in a plastic recycling yard a thousand kilometres from their mountain village. She learns about the world from there too, since the waste comes from rich countries and its labels, packaging and leftovers describe other places to her. Wang Jiuliang’s documentary looks at how two families make a living from this work and at what it costs them in health and what it costs the land around them. The film screened at Sundance in 2017. It is generally counted among the things that drew international attention to the trade before China’s ban on imported plastic waste took effect at the start of 2018.
