Gus Lopez B Bill McBride What Plastic Galaxy: The Story of Star Wars Toys Is About
When Star Wars opened in 1977 the toy licence sat with Kenner, a small company, and nobody expected demand on that scale. With no figures ready for Christmas, children were sold a box with a certificate in it and the figures were mailed later, and the rules of the industry were rewritten in those months. Brian Stillman's documentary tells that period through the people who did the work. Former Kenner staff, designers, writers and collectors talk. How the moulds were pulled, which figure was never made and why, how the packaging turned into an art of its own, all of it comes up in turn. The film does not give itself over to nostalgia; it asks, taking the attachment of childhood to objects seriously, why a toy is still sitting on somebody's shelf. Under seventy minutes long, it covers a narrow subject by talking to the people who know it.
