Please Teach Me English

Young-ju works at a government office. One day, after failing to help a foreign visitor, her department sends her to English classes. In the class she meets Moon-su. Moon-su wants to learn English because he hopes to find the older sister who was given up for adoption to America years ago. Young-ju is drawn to him; Moon-su is drawn to somebody else. Lee Na-young and Jang Hyuk take the leads in Kim Sung-soo's Korean comedy. The film takes up the pressure around learning a foreign language in the country directly: work, status and embarrassment all gather in the same classroom. The humour does not mock the students; it laughs at how stuck they are. In its second half the telling goes somewhere unexpectedly emotional.
