What Poly Styrene: I Am a Cliché Is About
This 2021 documentary, directed by Paul Sng with Celeste Bell, is about Poly Styrene, the singer of the punk band X-Ray Spex. After her mother's death Bell opens the notebooks and tapes she left behind, and the film is built around that reading. The narrative has two layers. One is the difficulty of existing as a mixed-race young woman in the London scene of the late seventies; the other is Styrene's later years, spent between mental illness and motherhood. Bell is both director and narrator and does not hide her own hurt; the documentary moves between admiration and reckoning. The writings are read by Ruth Negga. Who it's for: those who like punk history and documentary built from personal archives. Who it's not for: viewers for whom mental health crises and an absent mother would sit heavily.
