What Poor Little Rich Girl Is About
Barbara, the daughter of a wealthy soap manufacturer, is a child bored by being wrapped in attention, and her widowed father finally decides to send her to boarding school. When her nurse has an accident on the way, Barbara finds herself alone in the city and, passing herself off as an orphan, joins the two vaudeville performers she meets on the street, the Dolans. The three of them start a song-and-dance programme on the radio, and the odd part is that the sponsor is a soap company competing with her father’s. In Irving Cummings’ Fox production, Alice Faye and Jack Haley appear alongside Shirley Temple. The screenplay was adapted from stories by Eleanor Gates and Ralph Spence. Released in July 1936, it did very well at the box office.
