What That Night in Rio Is About
A nightclub entertainer working in Rio impersonates Baron Duarte, who looks exactly like him; the baron is out of town trying to raise money and a business deal has to be saved. When the baron’s wife asks him to keep the impersonation going, things tangle, and the entertainer’s girlfriend is not pleased at all. Irving Cummings directed; the screenplay reworks the 1935 film Folies Bergère, which came from a play by Hans Adler. Don Ameche plays both parts, with Alice Faye and Carmen Miranda leading. Moving the story to Rio had to do with Hollywood’s wartime policy towards South America. Miranda is billed third and is the film’s actual centre of gravity.
